Pattonville schools mark Veterans Day with special activities Pattonville schools mark Veterans Day with special activities Friday, November 16, Pattonville schools spent the weeks before and after Veterans Day learning about and thanking local veterans for their service to the country.
Several schools held special events. Current and veteran military members ran through the hallways as students and staff held up signs and cheered them on.
Students who knew a veteran that ran were invited to run with that person. Woody Woodard, a Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War and is an Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring volunteer at Drummond, led the run and carried the torch. Following the run, participants were invited to speak to classes or be special guest readers.
Drummond also adopted a local Air National Guard member who is being deployed overseas in December. The school is hosting a change drive, asking students to bring in spare change. The school also collected student-made cards to send to various veteran organizations.
At Parkwood Elementary School, fourth-graders performed a vocal music concert during the school's annual Veterans Day assembly on Nov. Music teacher Sarah Fee directed the performance which included songs for each branch of the military. At the conclusion of the program, veterans lined up in the school hallway and students shook their hands and thanked them as they exited the assembly.
Veterans and other special guests have been invited for a doughnut breakfast, followed by an all-school assembly that will include words of appreciation and students saluting their guests as they enter the school gym. The original date for Nov. At Willow Brook Elementary School, several classes incorporated writing "thank you" letters and cards into their lessons.
In addition, the school hosted a special Veterans Day all-school assembly on Nov. Members of the Student Council cheered veterans upon their arrival and made them feel welcome, and participants enjoyed breakfast made and served by the culinary arts students while listening to the high school orchestra play.
Afterward, guests moved to the auditorium to watch flag folding and missing man ceremonies conducted by members of American Legion Post The high school band also performed and a special "thank you" video was shown. Sixth-grade classes collaborated with library media specialist Julie Harder to learn about the day, and students took part in activity involving the use of primary and secondary research sources.
Seventh-graders conducted a visual analysis, writing activity and discussion around Veterans Day. They also read a news article about the meaning of the day and completed Veterans Day puzzles.
Eighth-graders watched a History Channel movie about the history of Veterans Day, read an article and completed a quiz and writing prompt.
